In my first semester course that I took in a HS night class when I was about 21, all we learned in one semester was meanings of the 12 sun signs, and how to make the symbols, called glyphs, that represent the planets and each astrology sign.
Then we discussed traits of every sun sign. I began my interest at 10, and at that time there were several monthly magazines on the market. In the 2nd half of the semester, we learned the math needed to cast a picture of the sky--the horoscope. Once we all had our own horoscope or Natal chart, we spent years learning to interpret. Now most charts are computerized, but some sites are not good and I know how to see if a chart is incorrect.
The best way to learn is to buy a few good interpretation books, and cast your chart, maybe a BF, or a best friend and a family member. That way you will be learning what a planet means in a zodiac sign. First you have to learn what each planet means anyway.
Then the aspects are important, the distances they are from each other matter so much. It took years for me to be able to interpret, and I don't mean to be impatient. For a quick interpretation, not a great one, but OK, is a persons' Trinity, the sun, moon and ascendant, and I think people are catching on to that. I was also blessed that my BF at the time took courses with me.
We were the only couple in the class, so got lots of attention. We dated for 5 yrs. So I always had someone to bounce my interpretations off. His were so original. If you do decide to do a serious study, try to do it with someone else, it's easier.
